A treasured summer road-trip to the Amalfi Coast is brought to life in ‘Amalfi Summer’, capturing the wild magic of some of Italy’s most picturesque beaches, where you can find beauty at every turn. One of the most popular tourist destinations in the world, it has been a must-visit since the 1920s, when intrepid British aristocrats and European high society started coming here every summer, drawn in by these pretty clifftop towns perched high above the sea. They stayed in glamorous old palazzos – now turned into the region’s most luxurious hotels – and explored its rugged coastline via boat. Its beauty inspired some of the greatest writers and artists of the 20th century, from D.H. Lawrence to Pablo Picasso, while the new social elite of the 1950s onwards, including Jackie Kennedy and her sister Princess Lee Radziwill, and Hollywood stars like Greta Garbo and Humphrey Bogart, started making this their ‘summer place’. Back then, they spent their days at Capri beach club La Fontelina – where the social elite still go today – alongside the Arienzo Club and La Scogliera, the chicest in Positano.
